Toronto Biobuild Collective First public event

On July 9th, 2024, the Toronto BioBuild Collective held its first public event at KPMB Architects, and the turnout was nothing short of inspiring. With a diverse group of about 25 attendees, including architects, students, and industry professionals, the event centered around a crucial question: How can we integrate bio-based materials into Toronto’s construction industry?

Diving into Bio-Based Materials The event kicked off with an introduction to bio-based materials, highlighting examples ranging from Indigenous longhouses to modern projects like the 80 Atlantic by BDP Quadrangle. These case studies provided a historical context and showcased the potential of bio-based materials in contemporary architecture.

Interactive Sessions and Collaborative Discussions A significant portion of the event was dedicated to interactive breakout sessions. Participants were divided into groups and encouraged to brainstorm ideas and share their insights on pre-defined prompts. The discussions revolved around defining bio-based materials, sharing experiences with these materials, and identifying the barriers to their broader adoption.

The collective's approach fostered an open dialogue, allowing attendees to exchange ideas and consider the challenges and opportunities in integrating bio-based materials into mainstream construction practices.

Looking Ahead The event wasn’t just a one-time gathering; it was the beginning of a movement. As the Toronto BioBuild Collective continues to grow, the goal is to turn these discussions into actions. The collective encourages anyone interested in sustainable construction to join and contribute ideas. Collaboration is key, and this event was a strong testament to the power of community in driving change.

Stay Involved If you couldn’t make it to this event, don’t worry—there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved. The Toronto BioBuild Collective is dedicated to hosting more events, workshops, and discussions aimed at making sustainable construction a reality in Toronto.
